What is Alpha Lipoic Acid?

You can be sure that a supplement has some remarkable therapeutic possibilities when it makes headlines on the five o’clock news. A recent experiment which showed the conditions of rats that had been fed a diet that was totally deficient in vitamin E tested alpha lipoic acid, which caused the rats to return to full health even though no vitamin E was replenished. The results of this test are profound, as giving these rats an alpha lipoic acid caused existing stores of vitamin E that the body was previously unable to use to be regenerated. Alpha lipoic acid is a vitamin-like antioxidant that has been used in Europe for a long period of time. It has recently emerged as an extremely impressive therapeutic agent that scavenges free-radicals. Recent studies have suggested that it has the ability to stop some degenerative diseases, the oxidative process of aging, and restores the health of diseased organs. Additionally, it has the ability to make up deficits of vitamin E or C and could potentially be one of the best treatments that have emerged for diabetes. Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is considered to be more potent than vitamins E and C, as well as coenzyme Q10. Unlike other antioxidants, ALA has properties that make it superior because it is able to replace certain nutritional supplements, while potentiating others, and inhibiting tissues from deterioration that is associated with diseases. This supplement is also both fat and water soluble, which allows it to protect lipid and aqueous cell structures. Alpha lipoic acid is a compound that is synthesized in small amounts in the body, but can also be supplied from food or supplement sources. A vitamin-like substance, it contains sulfur and also plays a crucial role in energy reactions. It can be found in liver, yeast, spinach, organ meats, broccoli, red potatoes, and red meat. When it is orally ingested, alpha lipoic acid is not compromised in the GI tract or the liver. Numerous studies have been conducted on ALA, all of which confirm its positive effect on metabolic processes, with recent clinical tests supporting its ability to enhance free-radical protection, slow the aging process, and guard against a variety of degenerative diseases. ALA was discovered in the 1930s, where it was originally classified as a vitamin, and later categorized as an essential coenzyme when scientists discovered that it was involved in the energy processes of cell mitochondria. It wasn’t until 1988 that scientists found that it also has powerful antioxidant effects. Alpha lipoic acid is important because it protects us from free-radicals which are present in a body as a result of the number of toxic substances such as auto exhaust, tobacco smoke, pollution, preservatives, and additives that we are exposed to on a daily basis. These free radicals can actually accelerate the aging process, causing premature tissue breakdown to occur. Additionally, our environment will continue to surround us with these pollutants that create free radicals. There are things we can do to minimize our health risks, which include exercising, eating nutritiously, and not smoking. However, these measures are rarely enough to decrease our risk for certain degenerative disease a substantial amount. ALA is beneficial because it scavenges oxidants that are left behind and helps to convert carbohydrates, fatty acids and protein to energy that is needed to drive muscle movements.

Sweet Tooth: Fact or Fiction

While for a long time I did not understand the scientific foundation for why my sweet-tooth seemed to always win out I knew very well that was a battle that I would eventually always loose. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but my willpower could only hold out so long and then I would succumb to the temptations of sweets. In order to fully understand this we need to take a little trip through history. Now the history I am talking about is more like ancient history, more specifically pre-historic history, because that is were this whole problem started. In all fairness for millions of years it wasn’t a problem because much like any animal in the wild we never knew when our next meal would be. If you have any doubt about that statement, just take an hour or so and watch one of those animal shows on your television. Often they talk about the fact that a pride of lions for example may not make a kill for a couple of weeks. The problem here is, if they don’t kill something many times they don’t eat. Imagine going for a week or two weeks before you had a chance to sit down for a good size meal. What do you think you would do once you were able to sit down to that meal? More than likely it would be a long while before you would get up from the table. That is the way you are wired at the genetic level. Deep down in your DNA you are wired to eat as much as you can, when you can, simply because for millions of years you had no way of knowing for sure when you were going to get your next meal. That same genetic code is what drives you today, because your DNA does not know that you have a surplus of food waiting at every corner today.Worse than that, our genetic wiring has us programmed to eat foods that are sweet and/or high in fat. Why – you ask? When you don’t know where your next meal is coming from it is very important that you take in the maximum amount of calories possible to sustain your bodily functions until such time that you get another meal. Not only are the calories important, but the type of calories. While the news media and all the hype about foods high in fat give fatty foods a bad name, the truth of the matter is that your body needs fats to function. These essential fats are very important for your brain functions, your nerves, and the list goes on. Again if you are going between long periods of time between meals, you are programmed to desire the tastes of foods high in fat. If you are starting to feel like the odds are stacked against you, you are correct, but the good news is that as you understand more about what is going on in your body you can eat foods that are good for you, but will turn off the alarms that drive you to eat the foods that are not so good for you.I am sure that you all know that there are parts of the brain that process feelings of pleasure and thus when something triggers that portion of the brain we tend to remember that and what to repeat that feeling of pleasure. Most notably, sexual experiences set off these triggers in the brain and as such there is no problem with keeping the human species alive and well. Needless to say, food also plays an integral part in the pleasure centers of our brain, in conjunction with the parts of the brain that tells us when we are full. Without getting in to all of the details of the biochemical signals that play a role in that series of communications that tell us we are full, that brownie was really good, or hey you really want more of that ice cream, I will tell you that there are a series of chemicals (Ghrelin, Leptin, Cholecystokinin, PYY) that control all of these essential communications. While I’ve covered this in-depth in another article I will mention that it is well documented that some of these chemicals measure lower than they should in over weight people leading researchers to believe that this flaw in their chemical makeup is leading to their weight problems.By now you are starting to understand why your willpower to stay away from that second helping, to avoid the fatty foods or to simply pass on dessert is under constant attack. Would you be surprised to know that the fast food industry, the manufactures of processed foods, and the food industry as a whole have known this information for a long time? As a matter of fact that understand everything that I have just mentioned and exactly how all these chemicals interact to bring the most pleasure to that all important section of our brain. As a matter of fact the food industry and those responsible for marketing these products study this at length, many times in the form of study groups or taste tests. Armed with this information they make sure that they can maximize the response all the way from your taste buds in your mouth right to the point of when you body is going to tell you that you have had enough and worse yet, all the way to the point when your body is going to start a craving for more of what you just finished. With what seems to be all of the odds stacked against us there are still many things under our control. Additionally, you can take heart in the fact that you are not in this battle along. By many estimates close to 70% of the US population is overweight to some degree and yet with all of the information that is known about appetite, diet and our biological make-up we seem to have no solution to the problem. You may or may not be aware of the fact that when it comes to track records the group of drugs with the worse record of all are weight-loss drugs. The reason being is that people will loose weight for a given period of time and then our genetic programming kicks in and we are right back to where we started before. Unfortunately, we have become a society of instant gratification which is not a good way to approach any kind of weight-loss program. In short we don’t gain weight over night and as such we should not expect to be able to get the weight off over night. Combine all of the weight-loss drugs on the market and the 50 million or so diets programs that are available to you on the market today and in short you have a fantastic recipe for total confusion. While there is nothing sexy or mysterious about the real answer there is one available to all of us. That answer is to eat a highly varied natural foods diet. That means eating lots of unprocessed foods like whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fish and when possible eating fruits and vegetables in their raw uncooked state. Additionally, eating much smaller more frequent meals is one of the best things that I have ever done. If you think about it that makes a lot more sense in that you body has to deal with smaller quantities of food and as such you body is much better equipped to take full advantage of the calories and nutrients that you have taken in. Not to mention as a bonus you just feel like you get to eat more, but in reality you will have eaten less total calories. For me personally the best way of eating is more of a Mediterranean type of diet. When traveling through the Mediterranean regions all of the meals typically focused on lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains/whole grain breads, lots of seafood combined with some red meats and for the most part most of the foods that I ate where all organic foods. As you now know we are preprogrammed genetically to really like the fatty and sweet foods, but by sticking with a highly varied natural foods diet our genetics will not rule our waistlines.References:1) Wikipedia: Appetite - href=”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appetite2) Time Magazine: Science of Appetite - href=”http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1626795_1627112_1626670,00.html3) FAQs.org (Appetite) - http://www.faqs.org/nutrition/A-Ap/Appetite.html4) Stephen Cherniske, M.S., The Metabolic Plan, The Random House Publishing Company, 2003, ISBN: 0-345-44102-85) Wikipedia: Blood Sugar - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_sugar6) Wikipedia: Glucose - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose7) Paul Zane Pilzer, The New Wellness Revolution, pg 62 – 76, John Wiley & Sons, 2007 ISBN: 97804701061818) Wikipedia: Cholecystokinin (CCK) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholecystokinin9) Wikipedia: Ghrelin - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghrelin

Supplements For Good Health Are Safe Or Not?

Human nutrition is the study of how food affects the health and survival of the human body. Without food our bodies can not stay warm, build or repair tissues and maintain our heart beat. Eating the balanced food can help us avoid diseases. Above stated and other important functions of body are fueled by chemical substances in our food called nutrients. These nutrients are classified as water, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Water helps the absorption of the food materials through the digestive tract. Importance of water can be judged that a person can survive only eight to ten days without water. Water also maintains a natural balance between dissolved salts and water, which are present inside and outside of cells. While water has no calorific value, without it we can not absorb the food we eat and eliminate waste through body's digestive system. Carbohydrates are the human body's key source of energy, providing four calories of energy per gram. When carbohydrates are broken down by the body the sugar glucose is produced. Glucose is critical to help maintain tissue protein, metabolize fat, and fuel the central nervous system.Proteins help to build and repair body tissues from hairs to fingernails. In addition to this proteins speed up chemical reactions in the body, serve as chemical messengers, fight infection and transport oxygen from lungs to the body tissue. Although proteins produce four calories of energy per gram the body uses proteins for energy only if carbohydrates and fat intake is insufficient. When trapped as an energy source protein is diverted, from the many critical functions it performs for our bodies. Fats provide nine calories of energy per gram. They are most concentrated of the energy producing nutrients, so our bodies need only very small quantities. Fats play an important role in building the membranes that surround our cells and in helping blood to clot. Once digested and absorbed fats help the body absorb certain vitamins.Fats stored in the body cushion vital organs and protect us from extreme cold and heat. Vitamins and minerals are needed by the body in very small amount to trigger the chemical reactions necessary to maintain good health. Thus we can make out the need of all the nutrients for maintaining good health. Lack of any of the nutrients gives rise to many problems. Thus we should always eat a balanced diet. But nowadays our eating habits are getting worse. Most of all food includes saturated fats rather than simple nutrients. Thus the correct intake on the nutrients is maintained by use of regular supplements. If the protein count in our body is less then the doctor advises us to take protein powders. The protein powders are a treasury of proteins. In the same way we can take multi vitamin or multi mineral tablets in case of a deficiency in the body.

Vitamins And Minerals For Good Health

Until recently most nutritionists would have said that it is unnecessary to take supplements as you can get all the vitamins and minerals you need from a healthy diet. But now many experts are eating their words. New studies show that we can benefit from extra helpings of certain nutrients. You do not need a fistful of pills in fact mega dosing can be dangerous. And you still must eat right that means maintaining a healthy diet featuring vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, dairy and enough fiber. Given out faulty food habits one multi vitamin and one multi mineral tablet a day with the regular dietary requirements may be beneficial. A daily pill can plug a few nutrient gaps, and it may help u live longer. But always be cautious of overdose. Now the question is that how should one choose from the multitudes of multi vitamin and multi mineral tablets available in the market. The answer to this question is that one should always skip products marketed for stress, heath health or other special conditions as they are more expensive and the extra ingredients are of questionable benefit. One should always go for a brand that packs no more than hundred percent of Recommendation Daily Allowance from the national council for medical research as some may contain a dangerous amount of certain nutrients. The ladies on post menopausal should choose a tablet with little or no iron. As overload of this mineral can lead to heart problems. She should opt for a tablet with calcium supplement of one gram per day. This will prevent osteoporosis. One should not get attracted to a brand because of its high price as the regular brands can provide the same benefits as fancy label pills. But one should always be careful of the overdose as it can be toxic for the body. The vitamin D plays a key role in growing strong bones and keeping them healthy by facilitating the absorption of calcium. Of late vitamin D is also gaining attention for helping to head off other medical problems like high blood pressure, heart disease, colon, breast and ovarian cancers. Experts believe that there is nothing else you can take that has this ability to prevent cancer. There is no such specified dietary recommendation for vitamin D as it was believed that we get enough of it from sun exposure. However experts now advise that adults should consume about one thousand international units of vitamin D either from food or from pills. Supplements generally contain four hundred international units per tablet. Over dosage is toxin for both adults and children. Toxicity can lead to constipation, back ace and high cholesterol. Increase in calcium levels may lead to hypertension and heart problems.

Does Pyruvate Help In Weight Loss?

There is currently a debate as to whether or not pyruvate can help in weight loss. There are two distinct camps, although the body of evidence favors those that believe that they can lose weight by taking a pyruvate supplement. However, pyruvate is not an essential substance, which means that it is produced in the body from other substances. It is, in fact, the product of glycolysis, in which glucose is metabolized in the presence of oxygen to adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecule of energy, and two molecules of pyruvate. The two pyruvate molecules then generate further energy by one of two pathways. In the first, the pyruvate forms acetyl-coenzyme A which is the first part of the Krebs Cycle, also known as the Citric Acid Cycle, which is responsible for energy production in the mitochondria. In the second, the pyruvate forms oxaloacetate, which is either used to form intermediates used in the Krebs Cycle or to generate more glucose through the process of gluconeogenesis. The ATP formed in the mitochondria is a form of stored energy, just like a battery. When energy is released it is converted to adenosine diphosphate and the battery is discharged. The Krebs Cycle then adds another phosphate group to convert it to the triphosphate again, and so on. The energy is not carried round the body, but used in the cells in which it is generated. Every cell in the body contains a mitochondrion, and generates its own energy. Pyruvate is needed in every one of them. The upshot of all this is that pyruvate is created naturally by the body, and therefore needs no supplementation. However, if there is a need to stimulate or increase the breakdown rate of blood sugars to prevent their later metabolism to fat, and hence help to prevent weight increase, then supplementation could be effective. In fact, it can be argued that the more pyruvate available then the more is the potential for energy to be generated, although it is glucose that is the main player in that scene. In the absence of supplementation, of course, pyruvate is available naturally in cheese, red wine, dark beer and apples, and is also produced from pyruvic acid. The acid itself can cause some gastrointestinal problems, but when it sees a calcium or sodium salt, such as common salt, it forms the stable pyruvate. But the real question is, if pyruvate can be used to reduce weight, then by what mechanism? Without a projected mechanism then the practical results cannot be explained, which renders pyruvate just a player but not necessarily the major player. The answer to this question is slightly open in that while many believe that pyruvate can be used to reduce weight and body fat, just as many do not, believing that there is insufficient evidence to reach that conclusion. However, if we examine the potential mechanism and determine the probability of that occurring, then we should be able to answer that question.Athletes claim that pyruvate supplements help them to perform better through its effect on the Krebs Cycle that is responsible for the generation of energy in the body. It speeds up the transport of proteins and glucose into the mitochondria of the muscles, and so enables energy to be generated rapidly within the muscle cells when required. This is a reasonable hypothesis, and one that is perfectly feasible given our knowledge of how the Krebs Cycle works. Pyruvate is an essential component of the Cycle, and in the presence of an excess of the other components, then additional pyruvate might well speed it up, and so generate energy faster and perhaps even increase the rate of thermogenesis and the burning of fat in the body. However, there is another possible reason for pyruvate helping to give the appearance of an increase in energy levels, and one that is just as feasible. During exercise, whether in a gym or in actual competition, the body first uses the energy generated in the mitochondria through the natural operation of the Krebs Cycle. Once the blood glucose is used up, the glycogen stores in the muscles and liver are used. Glycogen is the body's reserve store of energy, and is used when blood glucose has been depleted. Since pyruvate generates an increasing reliance on blood glucose for energy, the store of glycogen remains unused until it has to be, and hence the body appears to gain in energy. However, although this can explain at least partially the increased energy athletes experience when taking pyruvate supplements, it does not explain the loss in fact, that generally occurs after the glycogen reserves have been used up. A six week double blind study carried out in Connecticut in 1999 on 26 people given 6 grams of pyruvate a day for 6 weeks resulted in a significant decrease, not only in body weight, but also in the mass of body fat, in the group given the pyruvate, but no effect in the control group. A study in Pittsburg again showed pyruvate to result in loss of fat, with a group of overweight women losing three pounds more fat than a control that were given a placebo. However, the results here were questionable since the difference in weight loss was small in comparison to the original weight of the subject. The same is true of a follow-up study in which the control group lost only two pounds less than the pyruvate group. A third study in the same group should only a 1.5 pound difference. These results are no conclusive, although the weight of evidence is in favor of pyruvate being effective in helping you to lose weight. However, it has not yet been universally accepted. Is there a downside to using pyruvate that could argue against its use unless its effects have been conclusively proved? Probably the only one is that pyruvate can cause gastrointestinal problems if taken in large doses, but these would have to be in the region of around 30 - 50 grams daily, which is above those normally recommended not to mention very expensive.Although the jury is still out on pyruvate, it seems that it does help to reduce weight, and that apart from the gastric discomfort when excessive amounts are used, it has no side effects. It is also of use in enhancing energy levels, and in demand by athletes and body builders, and its effects are supported by theory and the way it works in the mitochondria to generate energy.

Can the Fatty Acid CLA Help me Loss Weight?

CLA is conjugated linoleic acid, a compound known as a trans fatty acid due to its stereochemistry, and while trans fatty acids are generally regarded as harmful, CLA is not because it is conjugated. This means that it has alternate single and double bonds in the backbone carbon chain, and the overall energy of the molecule is therefore reduced. Linoleic acid itself is one of the omega-6 fatty acids, the 6 referring to the double bond at the sixth carbon from the omega and of the carbon backbone chain. It is believed to be the cause of heart disease and obesity due to its increasing use in the diet at the expense of omega-3 fatty acids. When the molecule is conjugated, however, the fatty acid has different chemical properties to the standard isomer, and natural CLA is mainly found in cattle products, such as beef and dairy products. Conjugated linoleic acid is present in cattle because it is formed when linoleic acid is converted to oleic acid by rumen bacteria, that are responsible for the microbial fermentation of the feed of ruminant animals such as sheep and cattle. When oleic acid is formed, so too is CLA. However, the form used in supplements is manufactured from vegetable oils, and therefore suitable for use by vegetarians. The usual vegetable oils used are safflower oil and sunflower oil.It is believed to possess several beneficial properties, including antioxidant and anti-cancer properties, but it is for its ability to reduce body fat that it is best known to most people. A growing amount of information is being collected on the use of CLA as a supplement in the weight loss industry, although there are as yet no definitive mechanisms that explain its action. However, recent studies have indicated it possess properties that can help to reduce the levels of low density lipoproteins in the blood, and reduce the possibility of atherosclerosis due to LDL oxidation by free radicals. It is also theorized that CLA in some way regulates the prostaglandin biosynthesis that controls the level of hormones in the body that can regulate growth. An increase in growth hormones is one way in which athletes promote an increase in muscle bulk, while reducing their fatty tissue mass. CLA is also purported to increase thermogenesis, and so promote the loss of body fat and overall weight. Although most studies on the effect of conjugated linoleic acid in reducing body weight have been carried out on animals, recent animal studies have indicated that might not so much reduce weight, as to increase muscle bulk while reducing that of body fat. The end result, therefore, is not a loss of weight, but a leaner body that has more muscle and less fat. All it needs is the results on animals to be transferred to humans, and this, of course, is frequently the case. However, initial studies on the use of CLA in the human diet have been very positive, so the signs are good. Most scientific progress in human biochemistry has been obtained by virtue of prior studies on animals. These studies, of course, have been beneficial to the animals, making them leaner and much fitter than they otherwise would have been. It is believed that the same will be true of humans taking CLA as a supplement. In fact, recent studies are split about 50/50 with regard to the effects on humans. While some studies have shown no benefit, about an equal number have shown a positive benefit in the reduction in the mass of fat in the body. Some of the negative studies may have been flawed in measuring total body weight, and not the relative amounts of muscle and fat, and also basing their results on people already with a low level of fat in their body. In that respect, then, the results look very favorable, and taking CLA as a supplement is likely to help you to reduce fat and increase muscle, if not altogether lose total body weight. However, is that not the end result that most people want? They might not want to be lighter in weight, just to have more muscle mass and less fat tissue. In a study shown at a 2002 Experimental Biology meeting, it was shown that is was possible to substantially reduce body fat mass by taking CLA alone, and when it was taken in association with guarana, both the size and the number of fats cells in the body were reduced by 50%. However it has also been shown that CLA can be oxidized by free radicals shortly after ingestion, and that sesame lignans help to prevent this. Since sesame lignans can also be used in conjunction with CLA to reduce fat by increasing the level of fatty acid oxidation in the liver, than the benefit of CLA seems obvious. The antioxidant effect of CLA is one possible explanation for its anti-cancer properties, though there are others. Its antioxidant properties also have an anti-catabolic effect, in that it can help to prevent the wastage of muscle tissue. The FDA has published studies that attest to these anti-cancer properties. Diabetics, however, should consult with their physician before taking CLA as a supplement, since there is a body of thought that it reduces sensitivity to insulin. Others believe the opposite, so more studies might be needed in this aspect of the substance before it can be said to be safe for use by diabetics.Over recent years, the American diet has increased significantly in its content of the undesirable linoleic acid, due to its ubiquitous presence in margarines, and has reduced in CLA due to modern farming methods. Cattle feeding techniques have resulting in a reduction of CLA in meat products and milk, although eggs are still a rich source, and the CLA in eggs can resist temperatures used in normal cooking methods such as frying, boiling, etc. It is this CLA deficiency in the diet that has been proposed as one of the reasons for the current obesity problem in the USA. The European diet contains more beneficial fatty acids in general than the American diet. However, there is an increasing body of evidence being accumulated that collectively that suggests almost unequivocally that CLA can help you lose body fat. Unless you are diabetic, there are few if any contra-indications and an increasing number of people are finding it effective not only to lose body fat, but to replace it with hard lean muscle.

The E-learning Revolution

Education has always benefited from developments in technology, but the use of electronic learning or e-learning in colleges has enabled a revolution to take place in how students can learn, especially students who, for a variety of reasons, need to do a lot of course work from home. The impact of e-learning has been a huge benefit to both students and colleges. The Internet and web technology have given students and colleges the opportunity to take online degrees such as an online business degree and online marketing courses in a distance learning environment, while either looking after a family or while working in full time or part time employment. Web technology is continually improving to make online classes, access to research materials and communication between student and teacher easier to do.E-learning often takes place in what is often described as the ‘Virtual Learning Environment.’ The virtual learning environment is not intended as a replacement for traditional colleges, but is an alternative that has a good impact on the way students can study through distance learning courses.Affordability is also a key factor in the popularity of e-learning, with fewer costs associated with traditional college based learning such as travel, distance learning courses such as an online management degree are therefore made more widely available.Although it is possible to take a degree online, many colleges make e-learning part of existing campus based courses, where it is practical and demanded. This aspect of e-learning – where colleges provide courses according to the needs of the student – makes it often a personalised learning experience for the student.E-learning also benefits employers, allowing staff to study without taking time off work, or taking less time off work compared to a conventional college, therefore saving on valuable work time and company expenditure. E-learning allows learning to be flexible, based around the needs of the student, and colleges offering online degrees and distance learning understand the needs of the student with professional and family commitments.Much progress has been made in the development of e-learning teaching tools, to enable students and teachers to get the most out of their online degree.E-learning can often involve a combination of communication technologies, especially in what is often referred to as the ‘virtual classroom.’ With a range of communication technologies available to students, such as WiFi and mobile telephones, content, classes and communication between student and teacher demonstrate that e-learning is both functional and versatile, and can adapt efficiently to suit the needs of the student.Of course, e-learning technologies cannot replace the self motivation and discipline needed by students to be successful in their online or distance learning degrees, but can certainly encourage students who may otherwise have not been able to study for their online degrees where it not for the convenience of e-learning. The differences in how colleges approach the learning needs of students because of e-learning have certainly impacted in a constructive way, helping colleges develop their distance or flexible learning courses for the benefit of students.

Studying online for a criminal justice degree

I work as a motorcycle courier in a large-ish rural town. I love it. I love motorcycles and I love the simplicity of the job. The contrast between filtering my bike through the traffic, being 100 percent alert and aware of 100 percent of everything I need to know in order to get my bike from A to B, and the essence of the job, which is really just taking objects from one place to another, quite suits my personality.I would regard my job as a ‘proper job’ because I find it fulfilling. But I’m studying online criminal justice. Not as a hobby, or a passing interest type thing, but because I’m serious about getting a job in the sector, at least when I feel the time is right to do so.I suppose I started out being a courier because it was an excuse to ride my motorcycle all day! I’m not bored of the job, but I need to make more use of what I can do! I need to be getting totally immersed in a career. I’m sure I can still ride my bike to work in the meantime! When I enrolled on the course I really wasn’t that sure what to expect. I’d heard a lot of references to e-learning and the ‘Virtual Learning Environment’ and common sense pretty much explained itself to me. But actually going through the e-learning process and using the Virtual Learning Environment has been tremendously helpful in my studies, and made me realise just why online study has increased in popularity. Why criminal justice though? Well, the criminal justice system interests me. I think it’s one of those environments where there will always be new ideas, controversy, debate, and hopefully solutions for a better society. There is a range of professional roles in the criminal justice system, and although I’m exactly sure which particular job to aim for, the online criminal justice degree is allowing me to discover the aspects, which I feel the most drawn to.I’m now studying criminology online as part of my online BA degree, and am finding that the flexible nature of my job fits in well with the flexible nature of my online degree in criminal justice. I find the Zen like mundanity of the long haul deliveries across the countryside the perfect time to wind down after a morning’s studying online. Criminal justice studies requires a lot of thought and concentration, and my job compliments that perfectly.Another great aspect of learning online is that you get so much from the teaching staff, which is surprising given that you’d probably think that online study meant talking to a bunch of robots! These guys either have considerable professional experience or are still working in the sector. It’s not just learning guidance but also some pretty handy careers advice. I often wonder if I’m actually getting more from the tutors through email and messaging than I ever could have by actually going to a college!

Studying for a BA degree online is a realistic solution

Convenience and easy to use technology are definitely one of the major drawing factors to studying for a ba degree online. The process of studying online has become efficient, easy to use and easy to access, thanks to the development and innovations of the Virtual Learning Environment – where all the teaching and learning resources are available for the study of your online BA degree.People with work and /or family commitments often regard the idea of studying online for a BA degree a significant responsibility. It is of course, but students of online BA degrees who are also working either full or part time find that the study and teaching methods actually assist their work, and have little impact on their other responsibilities.Much of this is due to the flexible nature of learning when studying for an online degree. Classes, research material, academic documents and course information are all delivered on a distance learning basis, through electronic platforms such as email, Internet and mobile communications.Providers of online education are aware of the constraints of students who have job or family commitments and make sure that flexibility of course delivery allows students to learn to a schedule that suits them. Studying for a bachelor degree online is about meeting the needs of students. It’s easy to think that studying online is a two dimensional process relying on automated functions where learning is simply up to the student to make of the course what they will. It is not like that at all. E-learning is simply the technology enabling the learning, which is based on real teachers and real students. The principles of e-learning are that technology should be used to overcome the barriers associated with distance learning. Contact with teaching staff therefore is crucial to the skills and knowledge development of students. Because students will often be working in a profession related to their course of study, or at least be in a professional environment whilst studying for their online BA degree, teaching staff and the colleges as a whole will be very much aware of their specific needs and circumstances.Flexible online learning puts the needs of the students first; therefore course content is shaped according to the other commitments of the students. With easy to use web sites, and clear, accessible points of information, students can get on with studying, rather than having to spend time travelling to college, and bearing the associated time and financial costs.Studying for a BA degree online is a realistic solution for staff wanting to expand their existing roles, progress within their current job, or change jobs completely, without having to work around the constraints of a college, but actually discover that online colleges work very hard to meet their needs.Even as the technology changes and course delivery is modified to meet new developments in the subjects and study techniques, studying for a BA degree online a refreshing option for the committed student

Planning your ideal career

When first thinking about planning your career and finding yourself a new job, you should be realistic. Look at what experiences you have, the skills you have gained and what your strengths and weaknesses are. Is the career path you are looking at achievable with your current skills or will you need to partake in further training to achieve this. Looking forward may not necessarily mean leaving your current employer as you could apply for a different role in the company that better suits your career path. There are many factors to consider as staying with your current company may have advantages as there is less risk in applying for a new role. Once you have fully considered the situation you are currently in then you need to look at short and long term options such as, the sector, company activities, , size of organization, career prospects and opportunities. Bearing these things in mind can lead you to find you dream job working for a great company.Once you have decided in what direction you would like you career to take, you have to think about how to market yourself. The competition will be extremely high in large companies in popular sectors, so you need to market yourself effectively. This will require a combination of presenting yourself well in person and on paper. In both these situations, you need to highlight the areas in which you have succeeded in the past, your skills and experience you can provide in the desired role. The CV you provide will be the first time the employer learns about you, so should therefore be seen as a marketing tool. The aim of the CV is to get you to the next stage, the interview. Your CV should be concise, provide personal details, provide previous success, qualifications, experience and should be honest. You should make drafts of your CV and get friends or colleagues to read it and give you feedback. A tip for writing a great CV is promoting yourself by describing unique skills or interests that make you stand out from the rest of the applicants. If you are sending the CV by post, you should print it on high quality plain white paper or if you are sending it by e-mail, you should use standard fonts and use a universal format like a Microsoft Word file. When sending your CV to a potential employer, you should include a covering letter. The covering letter should compliment your CV and be tailored towards the job you are applying for. If your CV and covering letter win you an interview, the next stage is to research the company and the people you will be meeting. The key to a successful interview is planning. Preparation and research should make you less nervous when it comes down to the real thing. On the day of the interview, you should be punctual, confident, present yourself well, be friendly and use eye contact. If you are asked a difficult question that you can’t answer, be truthful and admit you are unsure, interviewers can tell if you are bluffing. Hopefully you interviewer will like what they see and ether offer you a second interview or offer you a job.

Healthy Vending Snacks on the rise

Americans spend $21 billion a year on vending machine snacks. Picture this person, gazing across rows upon rows of brightly coloured packaging, rummaging thorough their pockets to find the right change for the vending machine to gorge on the chocolate bar they so desperately need. Located in the back of offices and schools they sit and wait for those weakened by hunger to come, change jingling in their pockets. Vending machines typically offer snacks that would give most nutritionists a migraine. Not only are most the snacks unhealthy, they are also frequently obscure variations of known brands, the forgotten remainders of a failed product launch that no one will ever eat. In essence, many vending machines are where candy goes to die, a carb-loaded elephant burial ground. To be sure, vending machines have changed a lot since the days of the automats, when Jazz Age eateries like Horn & Hardart would dispense a slab of meatloaf or a hot apple pie through a slot in exchange for a nickel or two. Today, however, instead of meals, most vending machines deal in quick fixes; sodas, candy bars and snack foods intended to quiet a rumbling stomach, not take the place of actual nutrition. The problem is that, to many people, the vending machine is as much a part of their daily diet as fast food joints. According to the National Automatic Merchandising Association, in 2004, Americans spent more than $21 billion buying food and beverages from the vending machines. The average American works about eight to ten hours a day and, according to food-services giant Aramark about 15 percent of workers don't even have time to take a lunch break. For them, the vending machine is a straight shot down the hall, and the snacks inside it are usually fattening and not so healthy — that is until recently. Partly in response to pressure from parent groups, customers and the health-care industry, vending business companies such as Klix are now beginning to offer drinks that may pose less danger to the heart, arteries and waistline. As most students and office workers know, making healthy choices is a difficult task, especially when hungry. A morning spent in meetings and hours at the computer make a Mars Bar hard to avoid. For those office workers who don't have time to head to a restaurant for lunch or are working late, vending machines are their saviour. In January 2005, the National Automatic Merchandising Association started a million-dollar campaign called "Balanced for Life." It highlights the need for a balanced diet and fitness focusing on nutrition in the workplace where vending sales are highest. According to NAMA, a large part of the campaign is to encourage vending and snack food leaders to develop healthier choices, which, so far, seems to be working and needs to continue. However, even if there are healthier choices in vending machines, it is very easy to fall victim to a sugar craving. These lapses in judgement are why Dr. Kathy James at the University of San Diego recommends to try not to skip meals, and if you need small snacks, choose peanuts or yogurt. "If you go to a machine and get a candy bar, it makes you quickly energetic, but an hour later you feel slumpy again."

Life Expectancy Increases Worldwide

Since the dawn of time, life expectancy has gone up and down depending on several factors. Neanderthals, for example, had an average life expectancy of 20 years. The short life span was likely caused by a way of life that was much more dangerous than we now know.Mankind's never-ending race to find the fountain of youth may never be over, but the more we learn about the human body, the healthier we are for it. Even in today's world of fast food and desk jobs, people are finding ways to eat healthier and live longer. Recent life expectancy studies show an average of 78 years in the United States.According to University of Pennsylvania demographer Samuel Preston, "We (in the United States) are two to three years behind most Western countries at this point. We may be gaining, or not gaining, depending on the rate at which their life expectancy is increasing. The male versus female difference in life expectancy has declined over the past 15 years. It was previously eight years; it's now five. Another positive trend is that the life expectancy of blacks has been increasing relative to that of whites."Average life expectancy in Japan is 82 years. Some residents of the Japanese island of Okinawa rank among the oldest people on the planet. In 2002, nearly 35 people per 100,000 there were over the age of 100.Andorra is a small nation in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. Its residents hold the top spot for longevity. Andorrans can look forward to a life expectancy of 83.5 years on average. This has helped Andorra's hotels and tourism, with some hotels in Andorra concentrating on spa and wellness holidays.Potential Secrets to LongevityEach country with high life expectancies claims a certain amount of responsibility for the longevity of its citizens. In the Balearic Islands, for example, one 114-year-old man who recently died was the subject of study by doctors there for a few years before his death. He cycled to work in his family orchard until he was 102 and believed leading a physically active life and eating his native diet added to his life span.Different cultures vary on what they believe to be the secret of longevity. The Japanese say vegetables are the key, Greeks say olive oil, and the French say red wine. Many Americans swear by exercise, while Cubans say cigars are the key to longevity. The Real Secret to Longevity May Never Be KnownBecause human beings are so different in so many ways, geneticists have not uncovered the true secret to longevity. Geneticists, doctors and other medical and scientific professionals may never agree on one theory over another. The background and genetic makeup of every individual are so incredibly diverse that one true secret may never be known. There are, however, a few things all the professionals can agree on. Proper diet, moderate exercise, limited stress and no smoking all aid in living longer and healthier lives.

Don't let your children drink colas

It has been finally realized that the problem we are havingwith the obesity in this world today is because those who areobese, have acidic bodies. The following is what Dr Warberg the Nobel prize winner said………Dr. Otto Warberg received the Nobel Prize for discoveringthe cause of cancer - this being lack of oxygen which islow alkaline pH. No disease can exist in an alkalineenvironment. Japanese medicine has proven this over thelast 15 years. He says no disease can exist in an alkaline body. Obesityis a disease, so with this information all we need to dois bring our pH level to slightly higher. 7.365 is neutral and the number you should aim for. Simple as that.Let us look at other deseases that many are having by having an acidic body. osteoporosis, diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, arthritis, and acid reflux and many other maladies. If the body is in an alkaline state you will find you will not only be healthy, but you will feel healthy. In an acidic body you will have your body storing acidic wastes, because the body has not the ability to remove them. By flushing out the free radicals and the toxins with an alkaline cleanse your colon is able to work at top effiecency. So we are aware of this massive problem, what are we goingto do about it?An acidic body has no way to have anti-oxidation. The free radicalsare in there destroying our systems. So the most important thing we can do is, instead of allowing our bodies to remain in an acidic state, we mustturn it into an alkaline body then life would be much sweeter.I want you to ask yourself these two questions. When you were going to high school were there many students fat, secondly, did you lose friends to cancer?Look around you today, the fat people outnumber the healthypeople by a large margin.Something has changed for the worse hasn’t it?As you maybe know, each generation has lived longer than theprevious one, in fact nor too long ago it was suggested thatwe might even live till 150.Well I am sad to inform you, the experts are now saying, ourchildren are unlikely to live as long as us. Check here.I want you to view this video, you will then see the main reasonfor this import change. The video is only 1 minute and 13 seconnds, however it is proberly the most important video you have everseen, as to your children.Getting back to the children, take a look at this video and then you will never allowyour kids to drink colas or other so-called soft drink ever again. Here it is again. This is a fast video only 1 minute and 13 seconds so your strict attention is needed. If there is no Kangen water around, the body has to protect itself, it therefore steals the calcium it needs from the bones and teeth. This video really lays the law down. Did you see how much Kangen water was required to neutralize that Sprite?. It takes 32 glasses of Kangenwater to get your child’s body functioning again as it should after drinking colas. . Sprite has a pH level of 2.5, the body needs 7.365, there is a lotto make up, so the body in it’s wisdom takes whatever it needs fromwhere ever it can and doing harm to itself because our blood has toflow..Whoever in this world, told your children to drink these “Big Gulps”Wasn’t that a terrible message to deliver? If your child is obese, wouldn’t it be a great idea to get him/herhealthy.We all know the abuse these kids take, if they are obese,we know kids can be cruel name calling. If your child is obese, he or she is suffering silentlyand they become withdrawn.Do you want them to be slim and healthy. Ask yourself willthey change if you tell them to stop drinking colas? No theywon’t!! That’s the way it is.Here is a suggestion that is working with many mothers……… Make them responsible. Have them test themselves. Leave it to them, don’t interfere. In order to find out how acidic their body is, (this proves tothe child, why he/she is obese). What are some good ways to improve the acidity/alkalinity of your body? Here is a comment I had to one of my blogs….I’ve been testing my pH for years now and like the article says, its very easy to get good pH strips and the testing takes 2 seconds.I encourage everyone to give it a shot. It definitely changed my life….Let them Test Themselves, and you test Yourself. To find out where you stand in the acid/alkaline balance, test your own body’s pH level. This is easily accomplished by purchasing pHydrion paper, which is available at most health food stores. Test your salivafirst thing in the morning by spitting in a spoon and dipping theend of a pHydrion test strip. Write down your pH. The optimumsaliva should be 6.8 to 7.2 Then test your urine first thing in the morning. Simply pass theend of a pHydrion strip quickly through the stream of urine, and record your pH. By doing this, the child by himself/herself will gain the knowledge required. If your first urine or saliva is lower than 6.8 you are deficientin alkaline buffers and need to become more alkaline. Keeptesting yourself every day until you restore balance to your body.If your pH is very acidic, you know that you need to drinkmore alkaline water and eat alkaline foods. This way you can constantly monitor the health of your bodyand stay on top of any problems that could arise due to havingan overly acidic body!To read testimonials how the water has helped so many people here on this continent, CLICK HERE Your child wants to be healthy, leave him/her alone, just supply the stripsand have a Kangen Water unit. Here is an explanation of what the Kangen water unit does.Just one more point. Acidic wastes. When a person puts on weight, because of the body not having time to cleanse as it should do, the body starts placing acidic wastes in various locations in the body system. This sort of thing happens to many people If only John Wayne and Elvis Presley had known, they each had over forty pounds of compactedwaste in their colons, and hadit there for many years. Can you imagine that..Their colons were just notworking as they should and most likely they bothhad suffered for years and never knew the reasonNow that you know, please don’t make the mistakethose two made. Take a colon cleanse by drinking lots of Kangen Water. Here is a further important message. Simply This tells why we age. click here To read testimonials how the water has helped so many people here ion this continent, CLICK HERE Please click on these ARTICLESVegetablesBottled water Kangen KidsmissionopportunityGet the free Windows Media PlayerPlease click on the pictureUnderstanding this message is the first step to having a healthy body, I sincerely ask you to act on this. Welcome to the Playground

GenuineYou NewsWelcome to the Play GroundGo to your neighborhood park and watch the children play. Are the children counting calories burned? Are they checking their heart rate? Are they repeating the same activity over and over again? Are they checking their watches to see how much longer they have to keep this up?Despite decades of information from our health care providers, despite nagging and begging, despite Nike commercials, most people in this country do not exercise regularly. Can we look to the children for answers? The children on the playground are not there because they disapprove of the way they currently look and are trying to change that. They are not there because they have to work off that birthday cake they had at their friend's party. They are not there because being fat is the most horrible thing that anyone can be in this culture! At least for the time being, the children are there because they are exulting in their body's miraculous abilities. They are there because they love to move and climb and run and jump and see what they are capable of. They are there to relate to their friends, to feel the sun on their shoulders and the mud between their toes. They are there because they are glad to be alive. Now watch the adults exercising. No wonder most of us don't want to do that! Going around and around the same old track, wired up to equipment to let them know their "progress," headphones clamped down over their ears to keep their minds off this monotonous activity. Are they there because they are glad to be alive or because they are ashamed of their bodies?! (Or at least to keep from being ashamed of their bodies!)Let me clarify that there are indeed adults who are enjoying themselves as they exercise. And if you are enjoying your activity and have no resistance to going to the gym, going for a run or a swim or a bike ride, then good for you! BUT, if you have been trying to make yourself exercise for years, starting one exercise program after another, only to quit them in disgust at your lack of ability to become the culturally accepted thin and muscled symbol of health that has been sold to us, try this: STOP EXERCISING! Stop it right now. Go out and play. Kick a ball - ride a bike - go dancing - throw a frisbee - walk the dog. Stop counting laps, throw away your pedometer, stick your headphones in a drawer for some other time. Once you shed your negative attitudes about physical activity by learning to play again, then any activity you participate in can become play. You can play at the gym as well as you can at the park or on the dance floor. At what point do children today think that they must stop playing and begin exercising? Are they any more likely than the adults to stick with exercise programs? Maybe, just maybe, if we adults can drop the "exercise think" that consistently has not worked for the most of us for many decades now, we can save ourselves and our children. If you would like to shift to a more positive way of thinking about exercise and physical activity, visit GenuineYou for your first FREE coaching session and - welcome to the play ground!!

My old Television vs a new Plasma TV

I don't have a working television. Not one which works properly and actually shows live TV. It used to pick up a signal when I lived in London, but doesn't have any means to be tuned into the signal now I live in Cornwall. It used to work on certain channels with a Freeview box, but now doesn't even pick up QVC. I'm not entirely sure whether this is down to the television itself, or whether it's down to the seaside problem of seagulls interfering with the aerial. It's not like I'm a television purist. I'm not one of those people who doesn't want a television in her home. However, with the advent of the iPlayer and Four on Demand, I don't have a huge need for a television. My television has a built in video player. However, I learnt several years ago not to use this function as it has the impressive ability of screwing up tapes. Besides, videos are rapidly becoming an alien and decrepit technology, and whilst I still own some, I never feel the urge to watch them. No, the television is kept for its lazy parent option of the DVD player. If I'm having a bad day, or I have a deadline to meet, the DVD comes out, and my son is amassing quite a collection. I used to hire them for him, but by being possibly the worst person in existence at taking them back the shop, it ended up cheaper to buy the ones on special offer.Unfortunately, even its function as a DVD player is beginning to wan. I have to adjust the scart lead every time I use it – something I've had to do for a while. But now, every time I fiddle, it takes longer to find the picture, and I'm beginning to think the socket may finally be brokenVisiting my parents today, my son stared in awe at the large cheap plasma TV my Dad has just bought. I made the mistake of telling him how dodgy my television is, and spent the next five minutes listening to his search for the best price for a television. Having embraced the technological age far better than his daughter, he started telling me which price comparison sites offered what discounts on online shopping sites.I glazed over. I know eventually I will have to replace the television. I know when I do, I should browse through the various online shopping options. But, at the moment, I have neither the money nor the motivation.I am attached to my old broken television. It was donated to a squat whilst I was pregnant. When the squat was evicted, no one claimed the television, so I took it. In some way, it's part of my old life – a life I'm perhaps not quite ready to give up.Besides, I can't wait for the day when the television licensing people come knocking. I shall invite them in, cordially show then the lack of picture, and smugly ask them to leave.

The 3 Main Health Benefits Of Spa Breaks

From Jacuzzis to herbal saunas and steam rooms adorned with amethyst to luxurious beds of relaxing flowers, spa breaks are a much-anticipated getaway for millions of people. Whether they wish to pamper themselves with a deep massage or simply escape the stress of their daily lives, spa breaks have become a fast-growing sanctuary for both genders. But, they're more than merely a retreat from life's stresses. There are a number of health benefits offered by spa breaks. Below, we'll describe 3 of the most powerful benefits of enjoying the spa.Benefit #1: Stress ReliefOur brains have a tendency of internalizing worry and stress. We often don't even realize how devastating this stress can be in our lives. It affects our moods and performance at our jobs and homes. A spa break can relieve your stress, leaving you to perform well throughout the day. It helps to release endorphins which can relax your mind, boosting your brain function.Benefit #2: Relieves Muscle PainYou don't have to be an athlete to experience muscle fatigue. Many times, people who sit at their desks all day complain of sore muscles. This could be due to stress, high-blood pressure, and even digestive problems. Spa breaks can use warm therapy to increase blood circulation, get rid of residual lactic acid and relieve the tension in your muscles. The aches you feel at the end of each day can be eliminated.Benefit #3: Healthy SkinOur skin often reflects our mind. If we're preoccupied with anxiety and the strains of our busy lives, our skin can begin to look unhealthy. The pores become clogged. The skin begins to lose its elasticity. By receiving a soothing facial with a number of organic herbs and treatments, it's possible to regain the vibrancy that was once manifesting in your skin. At your spa break, you can relax while others help increase your body's blood flow, cleaning the toxins that can sully your skin.Enjoying Your Spa BreakSpa breaks have been enjoyed by millions of people for years. But, most people still have no idea of the health benefits they receive by attending. Using warm therapies, herbal treatments, deep massages and a serene atmosphere, spa breaks can help relieve your stress and muscle pain while nourishing your skin back to its former healthy look. Everyone leads busy lives. But, try to schedule a regular trip to the spa. Your body will thank you.

Why do pubs show football?

Clothing with writing on, logos, ripped bits, any sort of 'worn' styling, too flared, too tight, too baggy, I can't stand. I like stuff that fits slightly more tightly than regular and neutral colours. I don't like making statements through what I wear, except understatements, if you know what I mean.It doesn't help either that I don't like shopping on the high street. It's busy man. Real bustling, noisy, hot and bothered busy on those streets. And once you get into the shops it's even busier, noisier and nastier than outside. Every time I try and buy even a pack of socks more often than not I'll bail out amidst the cacophony of modern 21st Century consumerism and head home for the tranquillity and peacefulness of shopping for clothes online.Once I even went into a clothes shop to get measured then went home and ordered a pair of jeans online from the same company that measured me, because I just didn't have the time or inclination to queue amongst the melee.Until I can afford my own personal Bond street tailor the web is my shopping mall when it comes to clothes. Why? Because it means I can, in the comfort of my own home, (importantly) find those clothes I like (you know, without silly slogans on, frilly bits, etc) and browse through without the worry of getting shouldered by some over-zealous mother dragging her screaming kids down the clothing aisle.Shopping online for clothes is fun and easy. Rather than worrying about getting out of the shop into the fresh air, you are in a conducive environment for making rational decisions, rather than the environment that dictates: 'it's 5 minutes until the store closes, better get something, anything, otherwise it's been a wasted trip to the busy and overcrowded shops.'All you really need to know is what size you are, and even if something is too big or too small, most online clothes shops have easy to understand and helpful returns policies.Apart from having to wait a little bit longer to get your clothes that you've bought online – often deliveries will be just the next day – shopping for clothes online is miles more convenient and tons less stressful. For me it's almost a victory over the clothing products that I dislike, and the shops that stock them. Getting label-less clothing seems like a marathon effort when you're in the high street. There's a kind of perverse monopoly on style. But online there is a garment democracy, because someone somewhere is making and selling the types of clothes you like.Be it boxer shorts,, denim jeans or cotton shirts – even organic and fair-trade clothing – I can find them so easily on the web. Given that most online clothes stores are UK based and are easy to reach by telephone or email if you need more information, I am sometimes surprised that I even bother to go to the high street.Maybe I secretly like being shoved around by irate weekend shoppers; although somehow I doubt it.

Many Business Uniforms Are Not Tax Deductible

Meadowbroook, 14th July 2008. Many businesses who have bought promotional clothing or uniforms this year will shortly realise that they can't claim a tax deduction for the purchase."Unless all items of uniforms supplied to staff carry the corporate emblem or logo, the item is not tax deductable" said Rashpal Cheema from Promotional Clothing Solutions. "Many companies get their shirts embroidered or printed with their logos, but forget about their pants, skirts and shorts. Unless they all carry the company logo, all of the expense of purchasing the promotional clothing is non-deductable".Tax deductibility of uniforms is not the only mistake businesses make when buying promotional clothing, uniforms or work wear. Complying with safety regulations when buying uniforms or promotional clothing is also a problem area for many businesses."One of the other common mistakes businesses make is when they buy high visibility shirts or tops they don't realise that if the person works outside, the shirt or top must come below the elbow to comply with safety standards" said Rashpal."Sometimes companies buy short sleeved high visibility uniforms because the old fabrics used to be very heavy and uncomfortable. There is a new range of high visibility uniforms just on the market that are designed to comply with safety standards, that are 100% light weight cotton so they breathe and are easy to wear. There is no excuse not to comply with safety regulations with high visibility uniforms.""Just remember, even high visibility clothing must have the logo or company emblem embroidered or printed onto the item for the company to gain a tax deduction for the purchase" said Rashpal. If you would like more information or photos about this topic or to schedule Rashpal Cheema for an interview, please contact Rashpal on 07 3801 9444

Renewal, Hope, and Optimisming

As the weather warms, long-buried seeds of possibility start to wake and strive towards the light. Spring brings new beginnings and new energy into our lives. What will you plant in your garden this year?Optimism is a large part of gardening. You rake the ground, bury the seeds, water and weed and wait. The work you do in a garden doesn’t necessarily give an immediate return, but you’re sustained by the thought of your eventual harvest of succulent fruits, nutritious vegetables, or beautiful and sweet-smelling flowers. This spring, what will you plant? Like seeds, even small changes in your life can yield large results. But remember that even though a seed planted will often grow by itself, the best crops come from well-tended garden plots. Once your garden is established - once you’ve made the decision to change jobs, or start a creative hobby, or improve your communication skills - don’t just walk away and hope for the best. No, that’s when it’s time to start optimisming. No such word I hear you say. Well, there certainly should be is my very definite response to that. Optimism is such a powerful force that it needs to be a verb, because optimism without action is dangerously close to merely wishful thinking. For those who are serious about achieving their goals in life, being optimistic has to be about action and habitual behaviours. Your positive mental attitude needs to be balanced by an “I can, I will” philosophy of life. Dynamic optimism helps to make your mind more alert and open to opportunities, your imagination and creative powers more active; it will make you more enthusiastic about the challenges of life and, in all likelihood, will help to increase your willpower to succeed. Effective optimists are rational and objective-focused, just as much as they are positive.Good harvests come from productive activity focused on a goal, with the expectation of a positive outcome. This expectation is important: optimism strengthens your sense of purpose and clarity. You don’t tend a garden with the constant thought of “I hate vegetables, and it will all rot before I can pick it anyway.” Or if so, perhaps you’ve planted the wrong things!Optimism is the fertiliser that nourishes your emotional and spiritual garden. Apply it regularly, in thought and deed, and watch your garden grow strong and healthy!

Time Management: Who Needs It In Retirement?

Time management tools, strategies and even software are useful to goal oriented managers in corporate America, right? If you’re in your retirement planning years, isn’t it a waste of time (no pun intended) to focus an ounce of energy on time management skills? After all time is the one thing you’ll have plenty of, right? Not exactly. Even in retirement, you’ll still want to get the most out of your day. Time management happens to be one of the most valuable skills with which you’ll leave the workforce in order have a successful retirement. If you haven’t mastered it yet, there are many benefits to getting started today. Here’s why: The fear of no longer being needed, or the sense of not accomplishing anything can be stressful in retirement. To compensate, there may be a natural tendency to think of a bunch of things you’d like to do. Without good time management skills, the majority of these things will never see the light of day. You’ll tend to procrastinate thinking that there’s tomorrow…until too many tasks start to build up and become overwhelming. This will inevitably lead to frustration and asense of emptiness instead of accomplishment. You might even miss important appointments with friends and family.Your personal life in retirement can be as successful as your business life was provided you implement certain timemanagement strategies. As such it is highly beneficial to learn how to organize your day, how to schedule your time so you can accomplish more without feeling overwhelmed.A daily or weekly ‘To-Do’ list is still as valuable in your retirement as it was in the office environment. The reason is you don’t want to trust your memory to keep track of things that should be committed to paper and ink. Further, your to-do list will always constitute the profile of tasks you need to keep track of in order to see where you’re spending the majority of your time.Above all, you need to learn the importance of time. Although it may seem to be plentiful at first, it remains even more so a precious commodity. It is important to make your list and your schedule around your own concept of time. Your masteryof this important skill will serve to put your own life in perspective as well as help you avoid the stress associated with the feeling of accomplishing little to nothing in retirement.Notice you will not need much in terms of tools. Sophisticated software or bulky planners are not necessary. As long as your chosen tools work for you and you are comfortable using them, you’re all set. But at the bare minimum you should have:• an activity log to track your activities (however frequently you wish to track them – daily or weekly) • the habit of scheduling important events in your life (especially leisure time – because contrary to popular belief, all your time will not be leisure time) and,• a sense of your priorities so you can assign a time barrier to all the tasks you want to accomplish that are important to you.Don’t forget to stay flexible. You’re no longer doing this to climb a corporate ladder or to prove your competence. There’s no need to plan every minute of every day of your life. But at the same time be mindful that you are playing with the most precious of all commodities you’ve got left. Make it count.

Waiting For Real Life To Begin

San Francisco, CA – A posh penthouse on the west coast. A budding acting career complete with scenes in Basic Instinct and Clint Eastwood’s The Deadpool. A day that includes Bentleys and Rolls Royces. A world most people struggle and aspire for years to achieve. But the life everyone else seems to want isn’t enough for a man who’d rather fight for his definition of freedom. “The ocean for me has always represented mystery…if I’m on the beach for more than 6 months I get antsy.” Says Theodore Carl Soderberg, author of the new book “Uncharted Waters.” That is the very life one man gives up for months at a time to follow a need – an addiction to the sea.“I was off the water for 15 years,” explains Soderberg, using a similar term one would to be ‘off’ drugs or ‘off’ booze. He needs the ocean to feel complete. Soderberg achieves his need for freedom in a big gray Navy boat that sails for months at a time. Instead of spending the days in that expensive penthouse, he spends them eating with tin spoons in the mess hall. Instead of spending his nights rubbing elbows with movie stars he shares quarters with burly, bad-smelling bunk-mates.Some people only feel alive on a motorcycle, shedding their bland gray business suit every Sunday to show off their tattoos and glide down the highway. Some people need music to breathe, pulling a dusty guitar from the back of their closet to hit the cords on weeknights. Some will give up everything the typical American struggles to earn – because their spirit is fed by riding the waves. In his new book, “Uncharted Waters” Soderberg recalls being a boy at a Yonkers, New York carnival and speeding past the ferris wheels and roller coasters that would have seized the attention of other kids. He was mesmerized he says – by the boat rides – spinning in circular basins just five feet deep – and the force compelling him to dunk his hands in the cool water. Sooner or later, all men with a hunger try to put the yearning aside. They try to become ‘normal.’ They try to ignore that one, distinct, screaming passion only they can hear. They try to blend with the rest of the world and have a typical life. Does it ever really work? The addiction to the sea called him home at the age of 38. “I got in a mess of a motorcycle accident on one of California’s freeways, and hit the pavement at about 50 miles an hour.” Soderberg walked away without an outward scar, but forever changed on the inside. He was compelled to re-examine his life – and head back to where he belongs. Within a year he was with a reserve unit at Mare Island in Bahrain in the Iraq/Iran war. While the rest of the world follows stock market fluctuations or housing trends or the latest political debates, Soderberg floats a world away to wherever the Merchant Marines, and the waves, take him.It is possible Theodore Carl Soderberg is inside every American. It is possible every American has a part of them consumed with a passion or a desire few others would understand.Soderberg asks every American, “If you could walk away from the life you’ve worked so hard to earn – the life everyone wants – what is it that would set you free?”

Get What You Want In 30 Minutes

San Francisco, CA – “People who don’t set goals wind up asking, ‘How come I never got what I wanted out of life?’” Those are the words of Theodore Carl Soderberg, author of the new book “Uncharted Waters.” Soderberg isn’t just a successful author. He has two honorable discharges from the United States Navy, has been on the silver screen in Basic Instinct and the Rock, has made a small fortune selling exotic cars, and has toured the world with the merchant marines. How has he achieved every dream he has ever wanted? “Setting goals. That really has been the secret of everything.”Here are six tips to earn a successful life - one half hour at a time:1. Identify What You Want – And When You Want It“Figuring out your dream can be the hardest part,” says Soderberg. “So if you can’t be specific, that’s fine.” You don’t need to have a whole plan in place, says Soderberg. You just need a firm idea in your mind of what you want – and a solid idea of when you want it by. 2. Schedule 30 Minutes For Your Goal – Every DaySet aside a half hour every day to do something to get closer to your dream. Every day you build on the progress you made the day before. “You don’t expect to do the whole thing in a day or in a week – but a little bit every day, that really is the key to being successful.” 3. Make Goal Setting A Lifestyle“The key here,” says Soderberg, “Is to make sure it’s at the same time every day.” If your ‘goal time’ becomes part of your daily routine – you’ll be less likely to blow it off. Your scheduled goal time with yourself is as important as any commitment you’d make to someone else. You wouldn’t dream of blowing off a half hour meeting with your boss – make 30 minutes with yourself just as much of a priority. 4. Divide Your Goal Into Bite Sized Pieces And Tackle Them One At A TimeYou can’t expect to reach your goal without accomplishing the smaller steps building up to that success. “If your working on a big dream, break it down into little bite sized dreams along the way.” 5. Congratulate Yourself For Each Step You CompleteHalf of keeping motivated is remembering what you are working toward – the other half is acknowledging yourself for the work you’ve already done. Soderberg insists you pat yourself on the back at least once a month. “If that means buying yourself a flat screen or just nodding to yourself in the mirror, that’s up to you.” 6. Finish Up One Goal And Get Ready To Tackle A New OneAt some point you’ll accomplish whatever goal you’ve set out to achieve. So why stop now? If you stop dreaming of new goals – your life will get boring again. Build on the goal you’ve achieved, or write down a whole new adventure. Investing 30 minutes a day in your future can change your life. A few months from now you could be thinner. Maybe you could have a retirement plan in place. Maybe your life story could be written. It all comes down to deciding what you want out of life – and taking the action to make it happen. “Once you have the dedication, and the half hour – the only question is: what do you want to achieve?”

Setting Goals For Yourself

Have you ever wanted to set a goal and achieve it, but weren't sure where to start? Many people run into this problem, and end up not even going after a single goal. The secret to setting great goals is in using a simple system that finds what you want, what you need, and what will make the biggest difference for your life. When thinking about what you want to accomplish, you may find that you want to achieve more things right away than you really have time for. You can overcome this problem by writing down your goals and using the process of elimination to reduce them to fewer goals. If you try to accomplish too much in a short period of time, you could find yourself failing at all or most of those goals and feeling like a failure. By narrowing your goals down to the ones that you really want to achieve, you'll have a higher success rate and be much happier. First, write down all of your goals into a piece of paper. Allow yourself to write down as many goals as you can think of, and don't worry at all about writing down too many. You need to be sure you consider every goal you could possibly want right now, to be sure you really want to go after the ones you finally choose. If you weren't thorough with this process, you might discover a new and better goal right when it's getting tough to accomplish the one you chose to focus on. After you've written down all of your goals, number them 1-5, with #1 being your top goal. This will help get rid of all the clutter. We all want to drive a Ferrari, but there's little point in making it a goal to own one if another goal is to make at least $45,000 each year and pay off $35,000 in student loans. In that case you'd want to increase your income and get those paid off before blowing money on a sports car. Finally, remove those numbers, but now focus only on those five goals. Thinking about it carefully, number the goals according to which ones will make the biggest difference in your life. You want to find which of these favorite goals will make the largest and most positive difference in your life, and that is your top goal. You can still focus on the other 4, of course, but this one goal has to have a higher priority than all of the others. Don't worry though - once you achieve it, you can move one of the others up to the top. As you can see, goal setting is the beginning stage of a long road of accomplishment. Set your goals carefully, swiftly, and decidedly for top success.

Set Up Your Own Blog Free

© Jim Edwards - All Rights reservedhttp://www.thenetreporter.com-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
I've received a lot of email lately from people asking how they can set up their own blogs for family, friends, or business purposes without spending much money or hiring an expensive programmer or web developer.
Well, ask no more because I will now show you exactly how to get your own blog without dipping too far into your own pocket (if at all) and get up and running, even if you don't have your own website, hosting account, or domain name.
You basically get two choices when it comes to setting up a blog: host it yourself, or use a service that hosts the blog for you.
Each one carries advantages based on your level of skill, experience and how many options you want to add to your blog.
If you choose to host your blog on your own website, then you can pick from a number of different options, including MoveableType.org and WordPress.org.
However, if you don't want to host it yourself, you can also go to Yahoo.com, put in the term "free blog" and obtain a long list of services that will host a blog for you, either free of charge or for a fee.
Probably the best-known free blog service resides at Blogger.com
Recently purchased by Google, Blogger boasts thousands of blogs on topics ranging from ecommerce to pet manners.
Blogger enables you to set up a functional blog in about 5 minutes and start posting your thoughts, rants, or family facts with the world.
Log on to http://Spaces.MSN.com and find another free option offered by Microsoft's online service, MSN.
This service makes it a bit easier to share photos than Blogger, which requires a separate software tool called Picasa (also available from Google for free).
MSN's blogger service also seems to appeal more to individuals sharing their thoughts than to businesses trying to scare up new customers or get their links crawled by search engine spiders (another advantage of publishing a blog).
So if you're publishing the family blog, this one might offer more of the user-friendly options you need.
The one drawback to using free services always comes back to the age-old saying, "You get what you pay for!"
These free blog services come with virtually zero customer support, so if you can't figure it out on your own, good luck finding anyone to assist you.
If you don't mind paying $5 a month, you can get a full-featured weblog at TypePad.com that offers a decent level of customer support.
The blogs available here offer many more features than Blogger or MSN, but also require you to understand a bit more about blogging's more advanced features like "trackback links" and "pinging" blog directories to let them know you've updated your blog (so others can come take a look at your new material).
Regardless of whether you choose the free or paid option, using a hosted blogging solution rates best when getting started.
However, once your blog really starts to take off and you find you need more "bells and whistles," you may want to consider upgrading to a more sophisticated blogging solution.

Tips for Buying a First Computer

The first question you need to ask yourself is why you need a computer and for what purpose you will use it:
* Surfing the Internet* Sending and receiving e-mail* Word Processing* Spreadsheet and Money management* Listening and recording music* Storing and manipulating images* Playing games
When you are certain that you really need a computer then you need to consider what computer to purchase.
The most common type of computer is the PC. Fewer and fewer people these days use Macintoshes and while Apple still makes them they are used primarily for graphics work at the high end multimedia level.
For home or office use you may be far better purchasing a desktop PC with pre-installed software. And PC prices are on the way down.
Of course notebook computers are really great if you want to take advantage of the portability that they offer, although you really need to weigh this against the cost -- as laptops are still much more expensive than your average PC with the same functionality.
You need to determine what capabilities you want your computer to have – the size of the hard drive, the memory and the types of cards – video and audio – that it comes with.
For a standard home or basic office use you should be adequately served by 256Mb of RAM memory with a 80Gb hard drive for storage.
Two other things to consider are that you will need a monitor and software.
For a monitor, try for a 17 inch so that you don’t have to squint to see what is on your screen. Flat panel displays are great for saving space too and the clarity of the displays now are quite impressive.
Most computers will come installed with software. Find what software the PC will come with and work out if this is all you need.
Basic word processing, spreadsheet and email/organizer software is adequate for most people and the ability to access the internet will require a modem installed as well.
If you are worried about learning to use your computer, don't be. There are tutorials within Windows XP to help get you started, and "wizards" are easy to use, step by step programs built into Windows that will help you learn a lot too.
Plus, once you get hooked up and online with your own computer, you will have access to millions of sites ready and willing to help you learn all about your new desktop PC, the software you have, and even learn how to do things you never imagined!

(c) Jim Edwards - All Rights reservedhttp://www.thenetreporter.com-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
With 2004 almost upon us, right now makes the best time tostart setting your goals for the coming year.
Don't wait until December 31st at 11:00 p.m. to throwtogether a list of things you might want to accomplish inthe next 12 months.
Decide right now!
Make a commitment to improving your life and the lives ofothers and not just to make the same old "New Year'sresolutions."
If the simple act of making resolutions were enough, wewould all stop smoking, exercise daily, lose weight, own aluxury car, get out of debt, and earn $100,000 per year!
Sad fact: most resolutions barely make it past January 1st.
But have no fear!
If you're serious about setting and keeping yourresolutions this year, then the Internet can rescue youfrom backsliding on your goals.
Check out these tips for using the Web to keep you ontarget for 2004.
~~ Break Bad Habits ~~
Quit smoking.
Lose weight.
Make more money.
Three of the most popular New Year's resolutions that neverseem to "stick!"
Log on to search engine www.Google.com, put in "break badhabits" and you'll drown under the amount of informationfor quitting just about anything.
However, before you throw your hands up in disgust, you needto understand the point of the exercise.
It clearly demonstrates that the information you need tostop (or start) doing virtually anything to change yourlife exists, especially online.
No matter what you want, somebody operates a website, wrotea book, produced a video, created some articles, or made aCD that contains the answers you need to make changes.
Just log on, hunt down the information, and take action onit.
Some suggested phrases to help make your searches moreproductive: "stop smoking," "lose weight," "endprocrastination," "improve self-esteem."
~~ Talk To The "Future" You ~~
Many companies online will help you keep your New Year'sresolutions by sending you email reminders throughout theyear (for a monthly fee).
But, instead of paying, you can set up your own reminderservice.
Log on to www.timecave.com and sign up for a free account.
Then sit down for an hour or two and think about thechallenges you will face in 2004.
Write yourself encouraging notes in the future about how tostay on track.
Then, over the course of the year, you will receive yourown reminders and encouragement just when you need themmost.
~~ What Makes The Difference? ~~
Choosing to take consistent ACTION makes the differencebetween a wish and a goal!
A "wish" would be nice to have -if it isn't too difficult.
A "goal" is something you choose to act upon daily with aplan and commitment - no matter what!
The best summary I've ever seen of this principle comesfrom the second book in the "Harry Potter" series whenProfessor Dumbledore tells Harry, "It is our choices thatshow what we truly are, far more than our abilities."
(I have that quote taped to the top of my monitor)
The information to accomplish virtually anything is just afew mouse clicks away online and much of it's absolutelyfr^e.
Choose to use that information to make 2004 better foryourself and others.

Is Your Music Player Spying On You?

In today's times spyware is a very serious issue and all computer users should be aware of the possible damage it can cause. It is estimated by well known industry insiders that nearly 90% of all computers are infected with some kind of spyware. This nosurprise as spyware programs can be highly contagious and spread from computer to computer via emails and network exchanges rapidly.
Spyware's main intent is usually to track where you go on the internet. This includes websites you visit, what you buy from the internet, and generally what you use the internet for, all the while the spyware program will report this information back to the publisher. The publishers of spyware are rich with all the information of thousands of computer users surfing habits and they make a huge profit by selling this information to third parties who may not take your privacy concerns in to account.
You may think that running anti-virus programs and firewalls on your computer will be enough to protect you from this threat but think again. Spyware can easily slip past these programs as spyware disguises itself as a part of a program that you actually want to install on your computer. Programs that you use daily may be harvesting spyware.
One of the most popular music players on the internet that millions of people use to play, download and organise their favourite music with is actually spyware. Can you guess what it is? RealPlayer is not just a feature rich jukebox anymore, it's spyware. If you read the agreement before you install the player for the first time, RealPlayer actually tells the unsuspecting user that it will record all the information about what music you listen to, what videos you view and how often. It then transmits this private information back to it's corporate office using your resources while doing so. This information is kept on file and used to profile you. Unfortunately you have no say in what information they have access to.
Spyware detection and removal software is imperative to keeping your private information private and keeping your computer healthy. It's a scary thought that companies are armed with the technology to snoop on you when you are simply enjoying music and watching videos you enjoy in you own home.
